The stock, or shoulder rest, is the shaped piece of material at the rear of the firearm used for steadying the weapon against the shoulder. Most stoks will have a loop or attachment area for a sling and a shaped butt-plate. Many modern stocks are extendable and some even have cheek rests for the precision use of optics.
