locks
Intentionally formed, matted coils of hair. May be done by various methods, including back combing, interlocking, or not combing. Said to have originated in North Africa, locks migrated south to Kenya around the 15th century. Has been recorded to be worn by Maasai men, Ancient Egyptians, Pre-Columbian Aztecs, Ethiopian Orthodox church, even the Nazarites of Judaism. But now worn by anyone and everyone.
