forward rate agreement

Abbreviation: FRA. A forward transaction between banks and industrial firms whereby the two parties agree on an interest rate for a future period and no initial margin payment is required at the time the contract is concluded. Unlike financial futures, FRAs are not standardized and are not traded on interbank markets. They are used to hedge the risk of a change in interest rates by locking in the current interest rate for future payments.
