The original price of a security used in determining capital gains. Cost basis is usually the purchase price, but may be an assigned market value in the case of an inherited asset.

For participants in employee stock option plans: The cost of acquiring shares in connection with an exercise. This cost may vary based upon your grant type and acquisition date. Cost basis is used in determining capital gains or loss upon the sale of your stock.
