corner the market
To attempt to purchase all of the available supply of a commodity with the intention of controlling the market and advancing the price at will, obtaining a large profit by so doing. In the securities trade, it is an attempt to purchase a company's stock availble on the market and so force buyers (especially speculators who have sold short and must make purchases to cover their sales) to pay a high price.
