chamber

The cylinder in which ammunition is fired from. The cylinder in most firearms is directly connected to the barrel and holds the cartridge in place as its primer is struck by a hammer or firing pin. In the case of revolvers, the cylinder is not connected to the barrel and doubles as the magazine when not in line with the hammer. The cartridge is secured in the chamber before firing by the bolt-face or firing pin block.
