A scholarly, annotated compilation, organized either chronologically or thematically, of all of an artist's known works in a given medium. Each work is described through technical, bibliographical, and historical details, accompanied by commentary and, occasionally, relevant iconographic documents. Requiring meticulous research and fact-checking, the process of assembling a catalogue can take many years; even after publication, new information is continually gathered for the purposes of revised, corrected, and/or expanded future editions. A consultative committee, which might consist of art historians and/or descendants or beneficiaries of the artist in question, decides which works to include in the documentation. Ultimately, the catalogue raisonné is a crucial tool for establishing a work's provenance, with a potentially significant role both in whether or not a work is viewed as authentic and in the determination of its market price.
