beam flatness
Weakening of a beam's intensity to equalize it. An X-ray or electron beam is generally more intense in the middle of its column area. To attenuate this effect and "flatten" the beam so that it's intensity is equalized over the entire column area, flattening filters (for X-rays) or foils (for e- beams) are inserted in the beam.
