Oradour-sur-Glane, France. During World War II, 642 residents were massacred by German soldiers as punishment for the French Resistance. All the women and children were locked in the church while the village was looted. Meanwhile, the men were led to six barns and sheds where machine-gun nests were already in place. The village was razed by the Germans and still stands today as a memorial to the dead. It has been abandoned since 1944.
