The Office for Literacy and Outreach Services (OLOS) serves the American Library Association by supporting equitable access to the knowledge and information resources stored in member libraries. OLOS focuses attention on offering library services to traditionally underserved populations, including emerging readers and non-readers, incarcerated persons, the elderly, people with disabilities, rural and otherwise isolated populations, homeless individuals and families, urban poor people, and people generally discriminated against based on some minority status. The Office provides specialized training, information resources, and technical assistance to help libraries and librarians develop effective outreach and educational strategies, programs, and services for reaching new library users.
