Ndebele is one of the major languages in Zimbabwe, but it was first spoken in South Africa.

In the early 19th century Mzilikazi, the general of Shaka, the Zulu king, migrated Northward with his men, and formed a new and unique kingdom. Here, a distinct Ndebele language and culture was able to develop.

Ndebele is a subdivision of the Nguni people group, with close ties to Zulu, Xhosa, and Sestho.

In Ndebele there are three click sounds c, q and x, and there are five basic vowel sounds; a, e, i, o, and u. These remain relatively constant, making the language easy to pronounce (aside from the clicks)
