Novelist, born at Northampton, educated at Cambridge; designed for the law, but took to literature; owned and edited Once a Week; best known as the successful collaborateur of Walter Besant in such popular novels as "The Golden Butterfly," "Ready-Money Mortiboy," etc. (1844-1882).
