Dengue fever
In recent years, the incidence of this mosquito-borne viral infection has increased dramatically. Around 50-100 million people are infected every year, resulting in 12,500-25,000 deaths. The rapid spread of its mosquito carrier has been partly attributed to increased globalization, although the African slave trade gave it an early push. Epidemics became common during and after the second world war.
