standage room
A length of roadway provided near a shaft bottom to stock loaded mine cars and/or empty cars: (1) during peak hours when the coal reaches the pit bottom at a faster rate than the shaft can wind; and (2) during emergency periods, such as plant breakdown at the surface, thus permitting coal production to continue. In general, the standage room accommodates 45-min to 1-h winding capacity.
