(1) A control-structure database object produced during program preparation that can contain both executable forms of static SQL statements or XQuery expressions and placement holders for executable forms of dynamic SQL statements.
(2) A function that allows an application programmer to collect all the parts of an application together for distribution.
(3) In Java programming, a group of types. Packages are declared with the package keyword. (Sun)
(4) An installable unit of a software product. Software product packages are separately installable units that can operate independently from other packages of that software product.
(5) A collection of catalog entries that has a SKU and may be ordered as a single item. See also bundle, stock keeping unit.
(6) A shipping unit that may be tracked by a shipping carrier.
(7) A collection of related classes and interfaces that provides access protection and namespace management.
(8) A container that organizes artifacts into groups.
(9) The wrapper around the document content that defines the format used to transmit a document over the Internet, for example, RNIF, AS1, and AS2.

(1) A coordinated commitment control process between communicating transactions that ensures that all logically-related updates to recoverable resources are completed or that all are backed out.
(2) The cross-site mirroring (XSM) processing that copies data from the production copy to the mirror copy.
(3) In Unified Modeling Language (UML), the visual representation of the forks and joins representing parallel workflows. Synchronizations enable you to see a simultaneous workflow in an activity diagram or state chart diagram.
(4) The process by which a satellite downloads and runs the same DB2 database commands, operating system commands, and SQL statements from the satellite control server as the other members of its group download and then reports the results to the satellite control server.

(1) A data element or variable that holds the address of a data object or a function.
(2) The symbol shown on a display or window that a user can move with a pointing device, such as a mouse.
(3) See reference.
Industry:Software
(1) A processing step that prepares a program to be run. Activation can include allocating and initializing static storage for programs in a job and completing some portions of binding.
(2) In Java, the process of transferring an enterprise bean from secondary storage to memory. (Sun) See also passivation.
(3) The attachment of an activity to perform one of a series of processing steps. In order to perform all its processing, an activity may need to be activated several times. In between, it "sleeps". See also pseudoconversational.
Industry:Software
(1) A program statement that specifies an operation to be performed by the computer, along with the values or locations of operands. This statement represents the programmer's request to the processor to perform a specific operation. [OSF]
(2) In COBOL, one or more clauses, the first of which starts with a keyword that identifies the instruction. Instructions affect the flow of control, provide services to the programmer, or both.
(3) In REXX, one or more clauses that describe some course of action to be taken by the language processor. Instructions may be assignments, keyword instructions, or commands.
Industry:Software
(1) A program that causes a computer to act as a workstation attached to another system.
(2) A facility of the integration test client that enables the emulation of components and references during module testing. Emulators are either manual or programmatic. See also manual emulator, programmatic emulator.

(1) A data structure for processing work in which the first element added to the queue is the first element processed. This order is referred to as first-in first-out (FIFO).
(2) A line or list of items waiting to be processed; for example, work to be performed or messages to be displayed or transmitted.
(3) A WebSphere MQ object to which message queuing applications can put messages, and from which they can get messages.
(4) A logical subdivision of the MERVA queue data set used to store the messages associated with a MERVA message-processing function. A queue has the same name as the message-processing function with which it is associated.
(5) A sequence with restricted access in which elements can only be added at the back end (or bottom) and removed from the front end (or top). A queue is characterized by first-in, first-out behavior and chronological order.
(6) A WebSphere MQ object that holds messages for message queueing applications. A queue is owned and maintained by a queue manager.
(7) A constructed and maintained list of items that are waiting to be processed. A collection of data objects with the same name in a Shared Queue.
