static lines

Static lines are lines which provide a lot of information about what is depicted in an image. They also provide a framework against which other visual elements such as points and shapes interact. The relationships between static lines and the visual elements that cross, follow, or rest on them provide the brain with different kinds of information about the subject matter that is depicted in images. People are generally the most interesting of the dynamic lines and, naturally interact against common static lines, such as streets, walkways, trees, and columns. Understanding how static elements provide visual backdrops is helpful when planning compositions and evaluating dynamic scenes as they develop.
