Language modifications made by teachers are designed to help the students understand.

Non verbal adaptations – non native speaker use gestures more frequently and in more exaggerated way.

Para verbal adaptations – teacher talk is characterised by slower speech, and more frequent and longer pauses.

Phonological adaptations – articulation is frequently exaggerated, enchancing students' comprehension.

Adaptations of vocabulary – measuring the complexity of vocabulary

Adaptations of syntax –subordination and less marked language.

Discourse adaptations – use of prompting, prodding and expansions.

Response adaptations – teacher talk consists of a large number of repetitions, self-repetitions nad repetitions of others.

Conceptual adaptations – teacher use more explicit, more logical explanations.
