Ian Chesterton is a companion of the First Doctor. He is a science teacher at Coal Hill School in London in 1963, teaching the Doctor’s granddaughter, Susan Foreman. Accompanied by fellow teacher Barbara Wright, they follow Susan home after becoming curious about the girl, which led to them being kidnapped by the Doctor; becoming the Doctor and Susan’s travelling companion. During one of their adventures, Ian is knighted Sir Ian of Jaffa by Richard the Lionheart when they end up in 12th century Palestine during the Crusades. Despite enjoying his time travelling with the Doctor, Ian still wants to return home to his own time. Ian and Barbara return to London in 1965, fabricating a story about a missionary work in Africa to account for the two-year gap between their disappearance and return. Some time afterwards, Ian and Barbara get married.
