Cebu

Located in the center of the island of Cebu, is the city of Cebu, which after the city of Manila is the largest national and international importance.

Cebu City was founded by Spanish explorers in the sixteenth century, settling in this enclave as a base for the conquest of the rest of the Philippine archipelago.

Originally the town was called Villa de San Miguel, in reference to colonial administrator Miguel Lopez de Legazpi.

The influence of the Spanish Philippine culture is quite remarkable and Cebu is no exception, in any of its barangays (barrios) se pueden encontrar nombres de calles, parróquias o incluso empresas con nombre español.

In Cebu City is a landmark in the Philippines because of its emerging economy. After Manila is the main economic center of the country, and the city has several universities, prestigious schools and hospitals.

In recent years Cebu has been the recipient of migrants who come both from other parts of the Philippines and other countries anywhere in the world.

Many international companies have their office in the country on the island of Cebu and the presence of Westerners is very noticeable.

The latest census data yields a population of around one million inhabitants, while its metropolitan area is three times that figure.
